Nicola Badolato is a senior researcher at Bologna University, where he teaches Music Theory and Musical Dramaturgy. He has a PhD in Musicology and Music Heritage, a piano and harpsichord degree, and completed a postdoctoral project at Yale University. Besides publishing many contributions on journals and miscellaneous volumes, he edited musical dramas by Carlo Maria Maggi (2010), Giovanni Faustini (2012) and Benedetto Ferrari (2013), as well as the operas staged in Rome by Filippo Juvarra between 1710 and 1714 (2016). He is a collaborator in the project for the critical edition of Francesco Cavalli’s opus(2012–), and published a critical edition of the opera Ciro by A. Scarlatti (2017). He is a member of the “Il Saggiatore musicale” cultural association in Bologna, as well as of the International Musicological Society, where he collaborates in the Study Groups Transmission of Knowledge as a Primary Aim in Music Education and Cavalli and 17th-Century Venetian Opera. He is a member of the editorial board of “Musica Docta” and “Il Saggiatore musicale”, and a contributor to the journal “Nuova Secondaria”.

Abstract

This review considers the volume Musica e gesto nel teatro mozartiano. Le didascalie nelle "Nozze di Figaro" by Paolo De Matteis (Lucca, LIM, 2020). This is an examination that follows in the wake of the numerous studies addressing gestural expression in opera music, in this case applied to Mozart's Nozze di Figaro. The author carries out an in-depth analysis of the relationship between libretto and score in regard to the explicit and implicit stage, proxemic and gestural captions.
