Alberto Rizzuti (Turin, 1963) teaches History of musical civilization at Turin University, where he graduated in 1988. He later graduated in Musicology at the University of Chicago, and then worked as a researcher at Udine University (1994-2000). In this capacity he was granted a transfer to the University of Turin in 2000. An associate professor since 2005, he became full professor in 2015. From 2010 to 2016 he directed the Master's Degree Course in Comparative Modern Cultures; from 2016 to 2018 he directed the PhD Course in Literature. Since 2018 he has directed the PhD School. As a scholar he has mainly focused on traditional Western art music between the 16th and 19th centuries, a repertoire on which his Master's courses are also based. His teaching activity at Bachelor’s Degree level covers the history, now over a thousand years old, of Western music with a written tradition. In 2012 he founded, and since then directed, the online journal "Gli spazi della musica". Since 2014 he has been associate general editor of the Works of Gioachino Rossini (Kassel, Bärenreiter, 2008-). In 2017 he founded, and since then directed, the Centro Studi sul Teatro Musicale at the Department of Humanities of Turin University. Among his most recent works is the critical edition of Giovanna d'Arco (vol. 7 of the series 'Opere' in the Works of Giuseppe Verdi, Chicago - Milan, University of Chicago Press - Ricordi, 2008), the editing of the proceedings of the study day on Annibale, Torino e ‘Annibale in Torino’ (Turin, 22 February 2007; Florence, Olschki, 2009), and the monographic books Fra Kantor e Canticum. Bach e il Magnificat (Alessandria, Edizioni dell'Orso, 2011), Sotto la va celeste. Beethoven e l'immaginario pastorale (Rome, Aracne, 2014) and Musica sull'acqua. Fiumi sonori, fontane magiche e mari in tempesta da Händel a Stravinskij (Rome, Carocci, 2017).

Abstract

The article examines the different versions of Schubert's Choral Lied on a text by Goethe Gesang der Geister über den Wassern, focusing mainly on the final version for male octet and string ensemble. The investigation starts with a semantic-morphological analysis of the verbal text and then concentrates on the solutions Schubert experimented with in an attempt to produce a setting as close as possible to the spirit of Goethe’s text.
