Fabio Rossi

Fabio Rossi is full professor of Italian Linguistics. He has taught Italian Linguistics at the University of Messina since 2002. In 1998, he obtained a PhD in “Italian Linguistics” at the University of Florence. From 1999 to 2002, he worked at the University of Ferrara as a funded researcher. He is a member of the PhD scientific committee for “Humanities” at the University of Messina. His research interests include musical lexical studies (16th-17th century treatises and 19th century opera librettos), language spoken in the media and audiovisual texts (especially Italian and dubbed cinema), syntactic and pragmatic analysis of spoken language, Italian language teaching (also as a second language), and language ideologies. He has collaborated with distinguished cultural institutions (e.g. “Istituto della Enciclopedia Italiana Treccani” and “Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei”), scientific journals (such as Circula), and universities in Italy and abroad involved in the spread of Italian language and culture. Among his recent books: L’opera italiana: lingua e linguaggio (2018); with F. Ruggiano, L’italiano scritto: usi, regole e dubbi (2019); co-edited with P. Minuto, Parole filmate: le lingue nel/del cinema italiano contemporaneo, special issue of the journal «Quaderni del CSCI», XVI 2020.

Abstract

The first part of the article outlines a typology of music review and essay based on the degree of assumption required of the reader and the author's ability/will to address non-experts. The second part illustrates examples of musical teaching and essays suitable for those who cannot read music. In the third part the role of metaphor in addressing musicological subjects is explained, and some linguistic and stylistic features (aulicisms) peculiar to writing on music are exemplified.
