Lorenzo Bianconi

Lorenzo Bianconi is professor emeritus at the University of Bologna. He published Il Seicento (1982); with Giorgio Pestelli he edited Storia dell'opera italiana (3 vols., 1987-1988); with Giuseppina La Face he edited I libretti italiani di G. Fr. Händel (1992-). With Ellen Rosand he edited the critical edition of Francesco Cavalli’s operas (2011-). Since 2012 he has been on the scientific steering committee of the Dizionario biografico degli Italiani. A Dent Medalist of the Royal Musical Association (1983), he is a corresponding member of the American Musicological Society (1995), the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2015), and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei (2017).
Antonio Caroccia

Antonio Caroccia has a PhD in History, Science and Techniques of Music and is Professor of History of Music at the Conservatory “Santa Cecilia” in Rome. He is the author and editor of didactic-educational publications on music education and historical-educational processes in music, as well as of numerous volumes and musicological articles focusing on the history of music in the 17th-20th centuries. He is a member of the National Council for Higher Education in Art and Music (CNAM), an AFAM expert for ANVUR, President of the AFAM Teachers' Association and Secretary-Treasurer of the Edizione Nazionale delle Commedie per Musica di Domenico Cimarosa [National Edition of the Musical Comedies of Domenico Cimarosa]. He was a member of the board of directors of the Italian Society of Musicology and director of the musicological conferences and teaching sectors.
Giovanni Giuriati

Giovanni Giuriati is Full Professor of Ethnomusicology at "La Sapienza" University of Rome, Director of the Intercultural Institute for Comparative Music Studies at the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice, and since 2018 President of Associazione fra i Docenti Universitari Italiani di Musica [ADUIM]. His research focuses on Southeast Asian musical traditions, music in the oral traditions of Italy, and general issues in the discipline of ethnomusicology, including intercultural music education.
Claudio Toscani

Claudio Toscani teaches History of Opera and Musical Philology at the University of Milan. He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology from the University of Bologna and has spent periods of study and research at the University of Chicago and the Sorbonne in Paris. He has participated in numerous international musicological conferences and published studies on the history of Italian opera in the 18th and 19th centuries. He has edited the critical editions of Vincenzo Bellini’s Capuleti e Montecchi and Gaetano Donizetti’s La Fille du régiment, and is a member of the scientific committees for the editions of the operas of Cimarosa, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti, Puccini, and Giordano. He is the director of the National Edition of the operas of G.B. Pergolesi, and of the series “Intermezzi napoletani del Settecento”. He is President of the Italian Society of Musicology.
Agostino Ziino

Agostino Ziino was born in Palermo on December 24, 1937. He is an honorary citizen of Certaldo. After being an assistant professor at the University of Pavia/Cremona, he taught music history at the Universities of Messina, Siena, Naples, UCLA and Rome Tor Vergata. He was president of the Società Italiana di Musicologia, of the Istituto Italiano per la Storia della musica, and of the Centro Studi sull’Ars nova italiana del Trecento in Certaldo. In 2000 he was awarded the Feltrinelli Prize of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. He is an honorary member of the American Musicological Society and a full member of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia. He was editor of the journal «Studi Musicali» and president of the Orchestra di Roma e del Lazio. He has published numerous essays and articles on the history of music from the Middle Ages to the 19th century, and has organized and edited the proceedings of several conferences.

Abstract

This paper illustrates the important contribution of Italian university musicology to the training of future music educators, emphasizing the formative role of the history of music (or musics) not only for future musicians or musicologists, but for the training of all students. It also highlights some problematic aspects of the current regulatory framework for the teaching of music history.
