Olesya Bobrik is a musicologist and opera critic. At present she is a Scientific Researcher at the State Institute of Art Studies and at the Archive of the Bolshoi Theatre Music Library, and an assistant professor at the P. Tchaikovsky Conservatory. She is the editor-in-chief of the electronic encyclopedia Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (State Institute of Art Studies, Moscow, since 2017), and the author of numerous articles in the New Collected Works of Dmitri Shostakovich (Moscow, DSCH, since 2013).

Abstract

The article is a brief guide for critics that are about to write their first review of an opera. With a touch of irony, the author suggests ways of organizing the material, analyzing the director’s concepts, and the musical side of the performance (conductor, orchestra, singers).
