Fabio Rossi is Full Professor of Italian Linguistics and History of the Italian Language at the University of Messina. His research interests include musical lexicology (among other things, he worked at the LesMu musical lexicon project), the spoken language of the media, syntactic and pragmatic analysis of spoken language, language ideologies, etc. He has just published, with F. Ruggiano, Grammatica Treccani per le scuole (2022). He is co-editor with F. Ruggiano of the series Italiano di oggi for Cesati. Among his recent books are Lingua italiana e cinema. Nuova edizione (2023) and, with E. Assenza and F. Ruggiano, Manuale di linguistica italiana (2023). L’opera italiana: lingua e linguaggio (Carocci) was published in 2018.

Abstract

A series of Italian opera librettos with translations and explanations in Chinese is reviewed. The series is useful not only for singers, singing teachers and other opera professionals, but also for Chinese-speaking students of Italian. It should be considered as a model for a language teaching system (L2 but also L1) that finally includes librettos among its sources as an integral part of the Italian linguistic-cultural repertoire.
