Giampaolo Mele graduated in Arts and Humanities in 1984 with honours and a recommendation for publication from Cagliari University. His thesis focuses on the singers of the musical chapel of King John I of Aragon (1387-1396), on the basis of documents from the General Archive of the Crown of Aragon in Barcelona. He is Associate Professor at Sassari University, where he teaches Medieval and Renaissance Music History; he has also held courses on Latin Paleography and Musical Paleography. He is visiting professor at the Facoltà Teologica della Sardegna, and scientific director at Istar (Istituto Storico Arborense). He found and published previously unknown liturgical codices and historical archive sources. His publications include a Manuale di Innologia. Introduzione all'innodia dei secoli IV-XVII in Occidente, I, Fonti e strumenti, Cagliari, PFTS University Press, 2012 (an Editio maior with a Supplementum is currently in preparation).

Abstract

Guido of Arezzo’s letter to the monk Michele, universally known as Epistola ad Michaelem (and makes use of the Sapphic hymn Ut queant laxis, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, for didactic purposes) left a deep mark on the history of music, paving the way for an entirely new approach in Western music pedagogy, which combines orality and literacy. The essay contains a short ‘pedagogic tale’ and provides various didactic materials, which are integrated within the historical and musicological discussion (also via references to web pages, in order to provide a direct connection to the texts, music and codices).
