Abstract

This article reviews and explains the characteristics of a educational project, Doremat, linking mathematics with music. The project, introduced in 2007 in training and vocational schools in Emilia Romagna, has spread across the nation and is still expanding. In the last decade it experienced various phases of experimentation and didactic application, both in Italy and in several other European countries, mostly designed and conducted as action-research. Starting from the description of the history of the project, the article reports its outcomes, which have already been presented in two books (2015; 2018) and are summarized here. In addition, the article explains the epistemological foundations of Doremat, its main features in relation to didactic-methodological innovation, discusses a few key points connecting the two disciplines at the level of content, and clarifies the unfolding of the project in both field research and teaching practice experienced after the publication of the two volumes. In so doing, the article highlights potential areas of development for the study of music and math with this program.
