Carla Cuomo
is a researcher in Musicology and Music History at Bologna University, where she teaches Music Pedagogy. Her studies focus on ways of developing and transmitting musical knowledge at the intersection of historical-critical specialization, popularization and education. She has published several articles and a book on pedagogy and music education (Dall’ascolto all’esecuzione. Orientamenti per la Pedagogia e la Didattica della musica, 2018), several essays on the history of Italian music criticism (on Massimo Mila and Fedele d’Amico), and a volume in the field of “cultural studies” (Musica Urbana. Il problema dell’inquinamento musicale, 2004). She is a member of the Steering Committee of the Study Group of IMS (International Musicological Society) for Transmission of knowledge as a Primary Aim in Music Education (chaired by G. La Face).

Abstract

This review examines the volume Composizione, analisi musicale e tecnologia nella scuola primaria. I bambini compongono, raccontano, analizzano, riflettono (Pisa, 2019) by Emanuele Pappalardo. The book reports the results of a school experiment conducted by a network of institutions, including the Comprehensive School Institution of Latina and the Music Conservatory of the same city, where the author teaches. The relationship between composition, musical analysis and listening, mediated by the use of the computer, was the heart of the experiment, which was structured like a laboratory and organized like a research project. The purpose of the volume is to document both aspects, and also to provide a self-training course for teachers, to whom it is primarily addressed.
