Giuseppina La Face is the founder and director of this journal and editor-in-chief of the journal “Il Saggiatore musicale” (Florence, Leo S. Olschki, 1994 ff.). She was Full Professor of Musicology and History of Music at the University of Bologna, where she directed the Department of Music and Performing Arts, later the Department of Arts, from 2007 to 2018. Following research on late 15th-century Italian polyphony and on Schubert’s lieder, she has been a strong proponent of music pedagogy and music didactics studies in the last two decades, both in Italy (see, among others, the miscellaneous volumes Educazione musicale e Formazione and La musica tra conoscere e fare, Milan, 2008 and 2011) and internationally, promoting and coordinating the International Musicological Association’s study group “Transmission of Culture as a Primary Aim in Music Education” (2012 ff.). She chairs the University Network for Music Education (which includes 15 Italian universities), and is a correspondent member of the Academy of Sciences of Bologna Institute. She is president of AdDU, Association of Female Professors of the University of Bologna.
Paolo Somigli Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

Paolo Somigli is Associate Professor of Musicology and History of Music at the Faculty of Education of the Free University of Bozen/Bolzano, and was awarded the National Scientific Appointment as Full Professor in 2023. In 2024 he was elected Honorary Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. His research interests include the relationship between tradition and the contemporary, the Italian reception of dodecaphony, art music in Florence and post-war Italy, the Italian popular song, and issues of music education and music history training. In the latter area, he completed a three-year international research project entitled Classical Music in Music Education in 2023. His recent publications include Arrigo Benvenuti. L’uomo, il compositore, il didatta (Florence, 2021), Oltre il Quartetto Cetra. Antonio Virgilio Savona: scritti critici e giornalisti 1939-1998 (Florence, 2022), Musica in azione. Movimento e danza per l’educazione musicale (with Giulia Gabrielli; Lucca, 2022), Classical Music in Education. Proposte e riflessioni / Vorschläge und Reflexionen (Lucca, 2023) and the forthcoming La musica d’arte va a scuola. Idee e percorsi operativi per la scuola primaria (Milan, Italy). He is co-editor-in-chief of «Musica Docta. Rivista digitale di Pedagogia e Didattica della Musica» and is a pianist with a particular preference for the 20th century repertoire.

The two position papers, Presentism and History in Music Education: What Content for What Future? by Giuseppina La Face (pp. 1-2) and Necessità della storia della musica by Paolo Somigli (pp. 2-6), contextualize the reasons and cultural objectives of the meeting held in Catania in May 2023, Presentism and History in Music Education: What Content for What Future? In particular, they emphasise the need for historical perspective and knowledge of the history of art music as a heritage to be received and transmitted, and as a tool for understanding history and current events.
