The introduction to the panel discussion brings up the question of how it is possible to write the history of music – mostly, but not exclusively, that of the tradition of Western art music – in an age in which the historical perspective is no longer given precedence over theoretical-synchronic and ethno-anthropological approaches. To this purpose, it proposes a list of ‘key words’, from which participants are invited to reflect upon the problems they have faced in their endeavour to write handbooks and the issues arising from experiences of use and reception of their work.
