Abstract

This didactic application exemplifies a specific mode of listening didactics for a program music piece. It focuses on listening for, and describing, musical structures before the program is introduced. The object of the activity is the overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream op. 21 by Felix Mendelssohn, whose musical and expressive components are observed, trying to avoid any mention of Shakespeare’s comedy, which forms the reference for its program. Only at the end of the application will the characters and the plot be examined, showing students how the music structures described above can be referred to them.
