This contribution illustrates the initiative Classics in the Classroom, promoted by the cultural association “Il Saggiatore Musicale” and by the Unviersity of Bologna, Centro La Soffitta. The first part of the essay explains the pedagogical and cultural tenets informing the project: 1) the importance of both knowing and doing in music pedagogy; 2) the irreplaceable educational value of the classics in every citizen’s culture; 3) the importance of a collaboration between primary and secondary school, university and other formative institutions. The second part of the essay illustrates the role of music as a discipline in the curriculum of primary and secondary education and the didactics of performance, especially through practical examples related to the preparation of the initiative Classics in the Classroom.
