The article describes a didactic module developed during the 2017-2018 s. y. at the ‘G. Marconi’ - I. C. Centro 2 Middle School in Brescia. The didactics of listening was combined with the need to address a problematic phenomenon experienced by teachers of all disciplines: the often undisciplined behaviour of classes, especially in lower secondary school, when students have to get over the childhood stage and enter early adolescence. A workshop based on the provocative 4'33'' by John Cage and on the song The Sound of Silence by the duo Simon & Garfunkel was aimed at adapting the category of silence, in its various expressions, as an educational tool. Silence was approached as a privileged moment of interest and attention, as an element of listening education, in both the human and musical sense of the word.
